Cloth
A few weeks ago, we visited Matt, Patrice & Jonah. It was great catching up with old friends and getting some Jonah time. What I didn't expect, though, was for the trip to pique my interest in cloth diapering. I always though that cloth diapers were super cute, but my guess was that they weren't really worth the hassle. After watching an entire weekend of cloth diapering, I realized it wasn't nearly the nightmare that I had created in my head. When we got home, I started doing some research.
I was a bit disappointed at first b/c it didn't result in nearly the savings I thought it would. Those super-cute cloth diapers are pricey. It would take about 4-5 months to make up the cost--and that's before factoring the extra water and detergent. So I gave up the thought and moved on. That was until I made a realization...
I already have 1/2 of what I need if I go the simple route! You see, when Rory was little, she was a super refluxer. I bought a ton of burp cloths b/c we went through at least one with every feeding. What makes the best burp cloths? Prefold diapers! And I still have at least 15-20 floating around the house--and Quinn isn't a spitter so I haven't been using them. This morning, I made a trip to a store in town that has Snappis and covers. I bought one of each so that I could give it a try. Shockingly, even with the pre-fold, it wasn't that bad. The only downside that I can see is that Quinn HATES being wet or dirty, so if I really decide to do this, I'll probably be doing more changes than I have been.
My only complaint... going to buy the cover was just like buying clothes. You know how it is--you find the cutest shirt and as soon as you go to get it, you find out they have it in every size but yours. It's just not fair. Well, I found the coolest colored cover (it was a bright coral, btw) but of course they only had it in an XS and Quinn is definitely not an XS. So we ended up with pastel purple. It was either that or pastel pink. Show me some color people! Get funky!
At any rate, we've put on cloth diaper #1. I'm really curious to see if this is something that works for us.
Jen does the covers, and her prices are more reasonable than most. And she's all about the funky color AND will customize. Also, you can have that red diaper she made for Jonah (she said to give it you if you want it), so you can see what you think...
that is, if i ever see you again. you guys may have to come here. every time i put jonah in his car seat lately, he PUKES BIG TIME... all over the car seat. all over the bandages... so now i'm afraid to even try. grrrrr
i may never leave the house again.
